An idea by Organic

One forest,
grown from
many places.

Oasis is a virtual community where independent and aspiring conservationists plant and care for real trees wherever they live, and grow them together into one decentralized forest.

A new definition
Decentralized forest: to become a forest from urban and separated landscapes as a part of a virtual community.

Coined for Oasis by Organic

Who it's for

Conservationists, and people who want to become one, who are working on their own. People with a backyard, a balcony or a corner of a schoolyard, but no institution, no lab and no crew.

Oasis gives them three things that are hard to find alone: other people, tools like Atlas, and a way for their work to count, with credit for every tree they keep alive.

How it works

Plant where you are.
Grow it together.

1

Plant a native tree

On your own land, or with permission from the landowner or city. No yard yet? Start with a seed, houseplant or mushroom kit as a seedling in the forest.

2

Join it to a forest

Add a photo, the date and a rough coordinate zone. Pick the forest room it belongs to, like a wetland edge, a food forest or a street canopy.

3

Check in over time

Post check-ins and mark how it's doing. A tree counts once it's still alive after a year, because keeping life alive is the point.

Rooms to visit

Oasis starts online, so anyone can join from anywhere. Each room has a job.

Forest rooms

Each room is one forest, built by a small group of 10 to 30 people, with smaller chats by location for local know-how.

GROW TOGETHER

Tree catalog

Every tree in the forest: its name, species, caretaker, coordinate zone and living status. Kept light enough for slow phones.

EVERY TREE, EVERYWHERE

Forest globe

The whole forest on one globe, with color-coded community sections, trees and forest lots.

SEE IT WHOLE

Habitat cams

Live cameras and sensors on real habitats, like a pond or fungi bed, so members can watch and log how they're doing.

WATCH LIVE

Study Commons

Drop-in focus rooms with a shared timer, for writing up field notes, grants and research next to others.

NOT ALONE

Netherlands Café

The hangout: chat tables, lo-fi music and weekly events like Koffie & Kletsen and a stroopwafel bake-along.

PULL UP A CHAIR

Research and lab work connect to Atlas, Organic's research database.

A sample of what the catalog could hold. These trees and names are examples, not real members yet.

See the whole forest

Each colored section is a community. Dots are trees, squares are forest lots. Drag the globe, or pick a community to fly there.

Land that stays forest

Over time, the community can buy small pieces of land, like an empty lot or a stream bank, so the trees planted there are protected for good. Land trusts and conservation easements are common ways to make that last.

A conservation center you can walk into

  • 1A living willow arch at the entry, grown rather than built
  • 2A Study Commons under a living roof
  • 3Labs for mycology, living collections, and data and AI
  • 4The Netherlands Café, opening onto the pond
  • 5A ring of habitats, including Palm Huts woven from living trees
  • 6A solar canopy that powers the labs
Roadmap

Start small. Keep it alive. Grow.

Phase 1

Virtual Oasis

Forest rooms, the tree catalog and the globe go online. The first trees and habitat cams join.

Phase 2

First forest lots

The community buys its first small lots and protects them, with meetups and pop-ups in a library or campus.

Phase 3

The physical Oasis

A real center with study space, labs, habitats and the Netherlands Café.

One day

Above and beyond

A Google Earth-style globe from planet to single tree, Organic's own satellite, and maybe the first café on Mars.

Ideas in progress

What we're working on next

Oasis is early. These are the ideas being shaped now.

  • ArtworkIllustrations of each forest and tree, and drawings of how trees connect.
  • WildlifeRecording the birds, insects and animals each forest supports.
  • Naming forestsA naming ritual for each new forest as its initiation into Oasis, inspired by naming traditions and developed with care.
  • Admin dashboardA simple way to review check-ins and update each tree's status.
